Seasoning With A Purpose

Difficulty: Easy

As I am starting on this blogging adventure, I thought I should share one of the basic recipes. You will find this seasoning blend in many of my recipes.  It is a versatile blend, great for many savory dishes.  Emeril Lagasse and his famous Essence Blend were the inspiration for this blend.  Back in the day, I watched Emeril regularly on his cooking show.  He would generously add a little (or a lot) of his blend and do it with gusto as he would emphatically shout “Bam!”  Yeah, I may have done that a time or two.

I would never question the skills of the great master, Emeril Lagasse.  After all, he is far more skilled than I.   My palate, however, is different and I prefer a little less salt in my cooking.    His recipe was a place to start.  I changed up some of the ingredients and reduced the salt.  After years of adjusting the recipe, this is the one that I have settled on.

Blend together each of the spices in a large jar.   It is easier to add a little of each of the spices in layers, seal the jar and shake the jar until the blend is thoroughly mixed. (The layers of spices remind me of those sand art bottles you might find in a souvenir shop, back in the day.) Lastly, put your seasoning blend in a pretty jar and label it.

Keep a jar of all-purpose seasoning blend near your stove top, along with the salt and pepper to add to your favorite savory dishes. In addition to adding flavor to your favorite dish, this blend also makes a great gift for your favorite foodie!
